Steering group meeting 12/1/12

The project steering group met with Peter Chatterton our critical friend also in attendance. The steering group agreed not only to monitor the project and sign off deliverables, but also to have a critical input into the project and discuss hot topics as they arise.  Suggestions arising from this meeting included:

  1. Possibility of the involvement of doctoral students.
  2. Interest in pedagogic modeling/pedagogic patterns being extended to assessment (Diana Laurillard to present on this at a future team meeting).
  3. Interest in looking at module-level practice in relation to advising students about assessment, e.g. handbook or advice given in class.

Stakeholder engagement was identified as a being likely to be an issue and a stakeholder engagement plan was recommeded.

Meeting with JISC Dec 8th 2011

Gwyneth, Martin and Tim and pilot leaders attended a meeting with JISC reps-Lisa Gray and Paul Bailey- at the IOE on 8.12.11.
Mary Stiasny also attended for lunch.

Notes from the meeting will be available soon. There was some useful discussion around the Baseline report with a recognition that the darft report for Jan. 2012 will be incomplete and we will identify ‘known unknowns’-Martin’s phrase.

The pilots will also need to baseline the programmes before piloting the Assessment Career framework and these will be included in the Baseline report at a later stage.
Jisc will send us some links to other relevant projects and tools that we might wish to use.

Update – research team and Baseline review

Brian Creese and Jon Swain from NRDC will be joining Kaori in the research for the Institutional Basline report. The research team: Brian, Kaori, Martin and Gwyneth met on 23rd Nov. We agreed an outline for the Baseline report and how to divide up the IOE and external data for analysis. We identified gaps in data on types of assessment used at the IOE and front line staff perspectives of IOE assessment. Gwyneth will discuss these with the Assessment Review group and will obtain some transcripts of interviews with staff from the ‘Transitions’ project. Martin will follow up staff views from a survey of technology use.

A draft of the Baseline report will be available by 19th January meeting for the team to review and discuss.

Designing Useful Evaluations online workshop

Gwyneth Hughes and Martin Oliver attended the Designing Useful Evaluations online workshop on  7.11.11 run by members of the JISC Assessment and Feedback programme team. As a result of the workshop some possible evaluation questions for the Assessment Careers project are:

Is the AC framework widely understood?

How far has the AC framework been applied across the institution?

What impact has the AC framework had on assessment and feedback?

What is the impact of applying the AC framework on workload for teaching and administrative staff?

Please comment or amend these questions.

Initial Meeting of the Project Team

The JISC Assessment Careers Project Team at the IoE met on Thursday 20th October 2011. Gwyneth Hughes chaired the meeting.

This meeting allowed everyone to meet and briefly discuss the project plan.  Members recognised that a variety of good feedback occurs now but is not always formalised or accessible for future assessors.

The group agreed to set up meeting dates for the year ahead and will meet again on 12th January 2012 to discuss the baseline report. Many of the team will be meeting members of JISC, the funder, at the Institute in December.

Meeting updates will be placed on this site on a regular basis.
